OpenSky and AI Literacy on the European Stage

Written by Jennifer Ward | 21 Feb, 2025

At OpenSky, our reputation as leaders in AI and Data Intelligence continues to grow. This was underscored this week when our Managing Director, Michael Cronin spoke at the EU AI Office, 3rd AI Pact Webinar on AI Literacy—a prestigious event convened by the European Commission’s AI Office to shape the implementation of AI literacy policies across Europe.  Michael was joined by senior industry experts, including Alessandro Bonaita from Generali Group (one of the largest global insurance and asset management providers), Efrem Ghebru from EnBW Germany, (one of Germany’s largest energy providers and a key player in Europe’s transition to renewable energy), and policy leaders from the EU AI Office, who are driving the implementation of Article 4 of the AI Act. The event attracted over 4,000 attendees, highlighting the growing importance of AI literacy and responsible AI adoption across industries.

Key Takeaways from the EU AI Office Webinar on AI Literacy:

The EU AI Office is spearheading efforts to implement AI literacy under Article 4 of the AI Act, ensuring that organisations deploying AI have skilled and informed personnel capable of understanding and managing AI systems responsibly.

During the discussion, OpenSky’s Managing Director, Michael Cronin shared our approach to AI literacy and responsible AI adoption. Here are the key insights from his talk:

OpenSky’s Approach to AI Literacy

  1. AI Literacy as a Competitive Imperative

    • OpenSky sees AI literacy as an essential part of our work, ensuring that both employees and clients fully understand AI capabilities, risks, and safeguards.
    • Our AI training programs are built on our formal change management approach, ensuring AI adoption aligns with strategic goals.

  2. Tailored AI Learning for Different Stakeholders

    • OpenSky implements structured learning paths for different roles, ensuring engineers, business users, and decision-makers receive tailored AI training.
    • Beyond employees, we also ensure that clients, subcontractors, and third parties working with our AI systems undergo mandatory AI training covering transparency, data protection, and ethical considerations.

  3. AI Literacy Extends Beyond Our Company

    • We don’t just focus on AI literacy for our teams—we also help our customers become AI-literate.
    • Our client education programs ensure organisations can safely and effectively integrate AI into their operations, minimising risk and maximising value.

Other Takeaways from the Wider Discussion

  • AI Literacy is Now a Legal Obligation Under the AI Act

    • Article 4 of the AI Act requires all providers and deployers of AI to take measures to ensure AI literacy for their employees and relevant stakeholders.
    • AI literacy is about both risks and opportunities, ensuring that AI is used transparently, responsibly, and effectively.

    One-Size-Fits-All Training Won’t Work

    • AI literacy needs to be context-dependent—different industries and roles require different levels of AI understanding.
    • The EU AI Office’s AI Literacy Repository is gathering best practices from organisations to help shape AI education.

AI Adoption Must be Ethical and Transparent

    • AI usage must align with ethical principles, ensuring it doesn’t amplify bias, misinformation, or unintended risks.
    • Companies must focus on building trust in AI, not just through training but also by ensuring AI complements human decision-making, rather than replacing it.

Our presence at this event highlights OpenSky’s growing recognition as a leading AI and data intelligence expert.
